On Sunday 30 September 2018 at 3:30 p.m., Herbert Foundation is pleased to invite you to the presentation of the publication 1974. International Avant-Garde Art at the Palais des Beaux-Arts.

Joris D’hooghe will be in conversation with Yves Gevaert.

The exhibition Carl Andre / Marcel Broodthaers / Daniel Buren / Victor Burgin / Gilbert & George / On Kawara / Richard Long / Gerhard Richter was held at the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts between 8 January and 3 February 1974 at the initiative of then adjunct-director Yves Gevaert.

The participating artists were invited by Gevaert to make new works for the exhibition. The result was a remarkable ensemble of pieces by among others Marcel Broodthaers (Un Jardin d’ Hiver), Gerhard Richter (1024 Farben in 4 Permutationen), Gilbert & George (Inca Pisco), Richard Long (Pine Needles) and Carl Andre (Sixty-Seventh Copper Cardinal).

With the present publication, Herbert Foundation aims to emphasise the unique and international vein of this exhibition and underscore its historic value through extended writings by the Belgian art historian Dr Joris D’hooghe that explore the inception, realisation and significance of this venture.
The publication moreover includes a transcript of an in-depth conversation between D’hooghe and Daniel Buren about his contribution to the exhibition. D’hooghe’s writings are supplemented with a broad selection of photographs and historical documents from the Archives of Yves Gevaert, Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels), Daniel Buren, Jacques Charlier, Philippe De Gobert and Herbert Foundation.
