Concert: Hanne Darboven's Harp Solo - Opus 45 (1998 - 2000)

Hanne Darboven’s visual work (1941 – 2009) is astounding, both visually and substantially. Numerous series of framed sheets of paper are covered with handwritten numbers, signs, and words. Exploring the concept of time – all-encompassing and elusive – is central to her work. To this end, Darboven develops her very own calculation system to convert Gregorian dates into a single number.

Darboven, who was also an excellent pianist, transposes these visual time calculations to music. The musical scores are an invitation to further reflect on the experience of time and require a personal appropriation by the performer.

Within the framework of the exhibition Hanne Darboven – Welttheater, Herbert Foundation organises the performance of the musical piece Harp Solo – Opus 45 (1998-2000) in collaboration with the Hanne Darboven Foundation and harpist Stef Van Vynckt.

The European premiere of the live performance of this piece offers the opportunity to experience the remarkable musical facet in Darboven’s oeuvre. The concert will take place in the former living room of Annick and Anton Herbert at the Raas van Gaverestraat 106.

Stef Van Vynckt is specialised in contemporary classical music. He studied at the Ghent Royal Conservatory with Arielle Valibouse and continued his education at the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag and the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. Stef founded the emerging chamber ensemble EMC – Extended Music Collective and works closely with various leading contemporary composers to expand the harp repertoire. The past few years, he worked with, amongst others, Dai Fujikura, Maja Bosnic, Lise Morrison, Frank Nuyts, Siebe Thijs, David Fennessy and Pierre-Yves Macé and premiered several pieces.
