On Sunday 12 January, Nikolaas Verstraeten will give a guided tour of the double exhibition Sumptuous Allegories of Nothingness and Avis au lecteur, which he shaped in collaboration with Herbert Foundation.

Jan Vercruysse’s preface to his bookwork Spleen de Hambourg concludes with the words, “le trop savant seul s’y perdra”. According to Verstraeten, this warning that knowledge or erudition does not guarantee a better understanding of books or artworks, but rather the opposite, makes for the perfect introduction to the tour. When discussing particular works, he will examine how artworks in book form fit into an exhibition, a context that is not typically linked to ‘reading’.
